Without proper parental care, and treatment to your own body you may suffer detrimental health problems and so may your baby. It is important that you watch what you are doing so you and your baby can remain in full health and in a positive state of mind. Think of your baby before you think of yourself, you no longer have to worry just about your own body, but that of the developing fetus within you as well. One day that child will be fully grown as you are with proper care. Make sure you are making the right choices to insure the best results possible for the baby on the way. Diet Nutrition and Exercise
A developing fetus is completely in the hands of its mother, so to speak. When carrying a child the mother must recognize her nutritional needs and how she must balance her diet, along with the recommended amount of exercise to stay in shape. The fetus gains its nutrition from the mother’s blood. So that means the mother must have a healthy intake of proteins, vitamins, and minerals technically for two people now that she has a baby developing within her womb.
The soon to be mother has to make sure that she doubles her folic acid intake (B-complex vitamin), which can be mainly found within oranges and spinach. Both healthy and nutritional foods for the mother and baby, it is recommended that pregnant women consume a minimum of 400 micrograms of folic acid per day. This can lead to a 70 percent decrease in spina bifida, pre mature birth, along with other health degrading symptoms (Santrock, 2010; 78). Also, eating up to 12 ounces a week of fish is recommended for part of a healthy diet, but one must be weary of which fish to eat do to the possibly high levels of mercury located within the fish’s body. Mercury travels throughout the blood stream which would emerge itself into the fetuses developing brain and nerves system which can cause miscarriages, preterm birth, and lower intelligence (Santrock, 2010; 78).
Fish not to eat: shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and some species of large tuna.
Fish to eat: shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.
Finally, pregnant women should watch their weight. If the pregnant woman is obese and refuses to do anything about it this could lead to still birth and neonatal death. Also, the child could be born with nutritional problems causing the child to also become obese later on in adolescence. So with proper exercise and nutrition, you can make sure that your baby will be healthy just as you are.

Stress
Maternal stress has a big effect on your baby. Stressing while pregnant can increase the level of corticotropin-releasing hormone, a precursor of the stress hormone cortisol, in early pregnancy. These effects are linked to premature births in infants.
Not only does stress causes problems for the infants during pregnancy, it can also affect the infant after. It has been studies that pregnant women with high levels of stress can increase the risk of having an emotional child as well as others problems. Some other problems that stress may cause are cognitive problems, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and language delay.
Some tips on how to reduce stress during your pregnancy are to just take deep breaths whenever you feel like you’re having anxiety. Meditating is also a great tip. Lastly rest and relax is the main key.

Teratogens
Teratogens are any agent that can potentially cause a birth defect or negatively alter cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Some exposure to teratogens don’t cause defects but they can alter the developing brain. Teratogens include drugs, incompatible blood types, pollutants, diseases, deficiencies, maternal stress and age. Thousands of babies are born deformed or mentally retarded every year as a result of events that occurred two months before conception. Every fetus is exposed to at least some teratogens so its hard to determine which teratogen causes the problem. The dose, the time of exposure to a particular teratogen and the genetic susceptibility influence the severity to the damage of an embryo or fetus.
Dose: the greater the dose of an agent such as a drug the greater the effect
Genetic susceptibility: type of severity of abnormalities caused by a teratogen is linked to genotype of pegnentswoman and genotype of embryo or fetus.
Time of exposure: they do more damage when they occur at some point in development rather than at others. During germinal period damage may prevent implantation. Embryotic period is more vulnerable than fetal period.
After organogenesis is complete teratogens are less likely to cause anatomical defects.
Prescription drugs can function as teratogens. same with alcohol and caffeine but only in high doses.
