Identity Statuses
Identity is a self-portrait composed of many different pieces of material. These include career and work path that one follows, a person’s political view point, their spiritual beliefs, their relationship status, their motivation to achieve and intellect, their sexual standing, which part of the world they are from and how intensely they associate with their culture, the kinds of things a person enjoys doing, that persons individual personality characteristics, and that individuals body depiction/image. All these make up a person’s identity, there are endless combinations and none are alike.
There are four types of identity statuses, each with a different take:
Identity Diffusion- this is the identity placed on those who have not experienced any form of a crisis or made any form of commitment. They are not only undecided about any occupational or ideological choices, but they have no interest in such matters.
Identity Foreclosure- This is the status in which an individual has experienced/made a commitment, but never experienced a crisis. This occurs most often with parents and their adolescents decisions.
Identity Moratorium- This defines an individual who are currently undergoing a crisis but their commitment are absent or vaguely noticeable.
Identity Achievement- This status is given to those who have undergone a crisis and have made commitments.
In early adolescence most people are experiencing diffusion, foreclosure, or moratorium states of identity. As life goes on and more people develop is becomes harder to enter different or change one identity. Most college students are under the achievement identity for they are in it for the long run. In adulthood those who have achieved higher intellectual status and education tend to stay on an achievement based path; whereas those who have made no stride for success in the path will most likely not make any progress and keep the same identity.
